Join Evansville, (pop. 5,703) as the next Building Inspector. The City of Evansville is looking for a
qualified candidate to serve as the Building Inspector. The ideal inspector will have a deep
understanding of state building codes, a passion for customer service, and a desire to learn more
about Evansville’s unique historic and zoning regulations. This is a non-represented, full-time
position. The Building Inspector’s primary responsibility is the inspection of structures for
compliance with the Uniform Dwelling Code. The Building Inspector is also responsible for
enforcement of municipal codes related to stormwater and property maintenance.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must possess Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) Construction; UDC electric; UDC plumbing;
    UDC heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC); and soil erosion credentials.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of City and state codes regulating building
    construction and historic preservation.
  • Additional certifications in commercial construction, etc are also desired.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with public, contractors, and co-workers
  • Ability to work independently
  • Valid Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

General Duties

  • Oversees issuing of general building permits for alterations, replacement and/or repair.
  • Conducts inspections of buildings, structures, and land to determine compliance with all
    provisions of the Codes.
  • Inspects installation of sewer and water lines from the street to the property line.
  • Proactively investigates and resolves property maintenance and building code violations.
  • Oversees issuing of building permits for construction of one- and two-family dwellings.
    Assists with, or oversees, the issuing of permits on state-approved plans for commercial
    and/or industrial projects and performs some inspections.
    Maintains complete and detailed documentation of permits, inspections, enforcement,
    and property records. Files reports as required and reconciles building permit receipts.

Pay
Beginning pay starts between $32.79 and 35.57 hourly ($68,203.20 and $73,985.60 annually)
based on qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package.
